There were no major surprises in the cathedral city. Events in Bressanone will continue in the afternoon with the men’s qualifications.
In the absence of her teammate, Olympic champion Janja Garnbret, Julija Kruder from Slovenia delivered a strong performance in the well-attended Vertikale – many pupils from Brixen’s primary, middle and high schools took advantage of the organising Alpine Club’s offer to attend the qualification free of charge. The 25-year-old solved all five boulder problems and needed the fewest attempts, a mere 9. Ayala Kerem from Israel also reached the end of the route five times, but needed twice as many attempts. Four flashes were enough for last year’s winner Natalia Grossman from the USA to qualify for the semi-finals in sixth place in group A, which Miriam Fogu (3 tops), a climber from the Italian national team, also qualified for.
In group B Hannah Meul (Germany), last year’s runner-up, and Stasa Gejo (Serbia) delivered the strongest performances with four tops and five zones, for which they both needed the same number of attempts (six each). As expected, last year’s bronze medallist Zhilu Luo from China also made it to the semi-finals, finishing sixth behind Austria’s Johanna Färber with four tops.
While Grossman, Meul & the others can now prepare for the semi-finals on Saturday, June 10, starting at 11:00, the Boulder World Cup in Bressanone will continue on Friday afternoon with the men’s qualification. Then, together with Filip Schenk and Michael Piccolruaz, two South Tyrolean climbers will also be in action. In the evening, the live band “Spremuta” will provide a party atmosphere at the competition site in the Vertikale in Bressanone.
